CLEANLINESS MATTERS

OEN Magazine, May 2007

Durable recognises just how important it is that computer equipment is kept clean and last year launched the first ever Computer Cleaning Week, designed to help everyone maintain a clean and healthy environment. The week will run again this year, from 17-22 September. Stewart Anderson, VP Marketing says that in schools in particular it's important to highlight the importance of good standards of hygiene bearing in mind bacteria can be transferred very quickly from keyboard to person.

A research paper by the Clorux Company which ranked the 'germiest jobs' placed 'Teacher' at number one with the following equipment containing the most germs: telephone, computer keyboard and mouse.

Other interesting facts include:

  • Teachers workspaces are the most germ-laden with, on average 17,800 bacteria per square inch compared to 900 bacteria for lawyers. (University of Arizona)
  • Children touch and re-touch over 300 surfaces in just 30 minutes. (The Clorux Company)
  • Germs that can cause colds and flu can survive on common classroom surfaces for up to 72 hours. (The Clorux Company)

"Good cleaning products don't cost much and the benefits are huge, our range is particularly strong within a setting where there are children as all our products are non-toxic and non-hazardous - there is always a danger that cleaning fluids can be picked up and drunk for example."
